Gregg Schlanger is the chair of the department of art at Central Washington University at Ellensburg, and he’s also the most recent graduate of Storefronts U, presenting his newest work, BWR (Basic Water Requirements) in one of our Chinatown display windows.
Explicitly, the piece examines and represents international water usage, translating numerical data into sculptural elements. It charts domestic water usage per person per day in 60 various countries (Hey, guess where the USA is on the spectrum! Hint: not quite the most efficient users of water.)
But BWR is also a bright, shining, water-filled, joyous piece, complete with melting ice and flowing water. Gregg’s intent is to bring awareness to a global crisis, which the work does, but along the way it’s also a stunningly visual piece for this high-traffic thoroughfare.
Check it out anytime, and join us for a little sidewalk reception to celebrate Gregg and the work on Thursday September 6 from 5 to 8pm.
hey gregg, did you have to repaint any of those bottles?
I added some new countries but some are ones you painted! Also, you can’t see in these two photos (look on my facebook page) there are also 12 cast resin houses, cast in the molds you helped make. Thanks Brian!
thank you, i’m glad you let me tag along on one of your projects.
Gregg, as always – totally proud of your talent, your original ideas and artistic execution of those ideas that relate to a healthy environment. Your art speaks to your creativity and your passion for making this planet more environmentally safer for humanity.
Sent with love and pride,
Mom
